Manny Pacquiao was born December 17, 1978, in Kibawe, Bukidnon province, Mindanao, Philippines is a professional boxer, media celebrity, and politician who became world-famous for winning boxing titles in more weight classes than any other boxer in history. Manny Pacquiao’s early years were marked by financial hardships. Faced with supporting his family, he left school at the tender age of 14. He made his professional debut as a junior flyweight on January 22, 1995, at the age of 16. Many of his early bouts were televised on a program called Blow by Blow, where his all-action style and boyish smile quickly made him a favourite with Filipino boxing fans. His relentless determination and boundless skill earned him his first world title, the WBC flyweight championship, in 1998.

Pacquiao moved up in weight class, and on June 23, 2001, in his first fight in the United States, he scored a sixth-round knockout of Lehlo Ledwaba to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior featherweight title. Following four successful defences, he knocked out Mexico’s Marco Antonio Barrera on November 15, 2003, to become The Ring magazine featherweight champion.

Pacquiao engaged in a series of high-profile fights, winning the World Boxing Association (WBA) and IBF featherweight titles, the WBC and The Ring’s junior lightweight titles, and the WBC lightweight title. His rise was aided by American trainer Freddie Roach, who gradually transformed the left-handed slugger into a multifaceted boxer without detracting from his natural aggression or punching power.

At 40 years old, the oldest welterweight champion in boxing history. However, due to inactivity, in 2021 Pacquaio was stripped of the belt, which was then given to Yordenis Ugás of Cuba. Later that year he fought Ugás and lost by unanimous decision. Pacquiao subsequently announced his retirement from boxing with a career record of 62 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws.

In 2010, he was elected as a Philippine House of Representatives member, serving diligently until 2016. Following this, he won a seat in the Philippine Senate, becoming a prominent figure in the PDP-Laban party. Pacquiao’s political journey reflects his commitment to serving his nation and advocating for the welfare of its people.

Philanthropy

Embracing his role as a philanthropist, he established the Manny Pacquiao Foundation, which is dedicated to assisting impoverished families in the Philippines. Pacquiao’s philanthropy has become so great that his friend and boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard warned him to be careful about being overly generous, lest he wind up with nothing. After earning upwards of $120 million in this year’s fight with American Floyd Mayweather, Pacquiao’s promoter said, “I’m sure half of what Manny earns in this fight is going to go to charity. That is just Manny.”

Pacquiao married Jinkee Jamora on May 10, 1999. Together, they have five children, Emmanuel Jr., Michael Stephen, Mary Divine Grace, Queen Elizabeth and Israel. In 2022, Pacquiao graduated from Philippine Christian University, with a master’s degree in management, majoring in public administration.
