Varazdat: The Armenian Boar
Varazdat, meaning “given by boars” in Persian, achieved glory as the champion of the Olympic Games in 385 BC. Olympic fist-fighting, a dangerous sport, was his forte. Emperor Theodosius later banned the games as pagan, making Varazdat one of the last ancient winners. His victory is commemorated with a statue in Olympia, Greece.
Dorando Pietri: The disqualified winner.
Sometimes, a passion hits you so hard that you forget everything else in the vicinity. Such was the case with Dorando Pietri, a cook in a café in Italy. A marathon was occurring in the vicinity of the café dorando worked in, marathon was in all its grandeur with Pericle Pagliani leading. Dorando was mused with this sport and legend has it that he started running the marathon in clothes of a cook. He finished the race before Pagliani.
The Unplayable ball
Shane Warne had just played a total of 11 test matches and taken 31 wickets till 1993 Ashes series in England. The pitch was old Trafford, Manchester, renowned for benefitting the spin bowling. Shane warne was a leg-spinner, a type of spin considered to be outdated by the cricketing pundits and public dismissed him as a promising-yet outdated spinner.
Unstoppable: The Life and Legend of LeBron James
LeBron James was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio. His full name is LeBron Raymone James Sr. He was raised by his mother, Gloria Marie James, who worked multiple jobs to support the family. He was heavily touted by the national media as a future NBA superstar for his all-around scoring, passing, athleticism and playmaking abilities He led his teams to four National Basketball Association (NBA) championships. In 2023 he became the all-time leading scorer in the game.
Bob Beamon: A leap of faith
There are certain things which are “Common sense” in the sporting fraternity, for example not drinking before the OLYMPICS final! But beamon did not mind doing that, as the story goes he had a couple of drinks on the night before finals…..
